A Wireless G router is a type of wireless router that adheres to the 802.11g protocol. For the average consumer, this means nothing. The most important thing is that Wireless G is currently the most common type of wireless router. It is five times faster than the older Wireless B routers. The speed of a Wireless G router is 54 Mbps. This means that 54 Megabytes of data can be transferred via the wireless router per second. That is more then fast enough for most home and small office users.

Most of the major manufacturers make Wireless G routers. This includes Linksys, Belkin, D Link and Netgear.

Next Generation Wireless N Router

The latest standard (protocol) is the Wireless N router. Products made to the Wireless N (802.11n) standard can offer faster speeds and greater coverage areas. However the Wireless N standard has not been ratified by the IEEE (the body responsible with ratifing standards that are agreed by the Wi-Fi Alliance). It is expected to be ratified in 2009. Therefore, currently the Wireless G router is the latest in the series that has been ratified.
